Primarily colonise mammals and birds
Major human pathogen: Pasteurella multocida
Virulence factors - capsule and endotoxin
Transmission - animal bite/cat scratch
Should be suspected in case of acute painful cellulitis developed in 24 hours of animal bite or cat scratch or animal licking wound
Lesion begins to drain within 1-2 days
Other symptoms:
Aerobes/facultative anaerobes
Bipolar staining
Cultured on blood agar
Nonhemolytic colonies
Wound debridement
First line: Penicillin G, ampicillin, amoxicillin
