Fresh frozen plasma
... is prepared from fresh blood and frozen rapidy to be stored at -30C
- Used for replacement of coagulation factors
- Shelf-life of 1 year
Cryoprecipitate
... is produced from freshly separated plasma by freezing at -70C, followed by thawing at 4C
Cryoprecipitate is rich in
- Factor 8
* ~ 80 units
- Fibrinogen
- Fibrinectin
* ~ 250mg
NB:
Normal fibrinogen level = 3g/L [???]
Freeze-dried factor 8 concentrate
- Lyophilized preparation from FFP
- Stored at 4C
- Contains large amounts of factor 8, and small amounts of fibrinogen
- Higher risk of transmitting hepatitis
Freeze-dried factor 9 concentrate
- Used for treatment of factor 9 deficiency (Christmas disease, or Haemophilia B)
- Also contains factors 2, 7, 10
